Personalised Sheffield Wednesday Football Books

Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday FC was formed in 1867 when the Wednesday Cricket Club was expanded to include football. Football was only intended to help the team remain fit during the winter months, but it soon became very popular and the main source of revenue at the club. The cricket side later disbanded. Sheffield Wednesday Football Club turned professional in 1887, but they were denied entry into the Football League. The Owls became founder members of the break-away Football Alliance in 1889 and they won the inaugural league championship. Wednesday also won the FA Cup that season and the club’s success eventually led them into the First Division three years later. Sheffield Wednesday went on to become a highly accomplished side, winning four league titles and two further FA Cups by the mid-1930s. The Owls struggled to match this success over the following decades. Sheffield Wednesday reached the FA Cup final in 1966, but the Owls did not win another trophy until the 1990s. The drought was broken in 1991 with a win over Manchester United in the League Cup final.
