Stamford Bridge was originally home to the London Athletics Club. Gus and Joseph Mears took over the lease in 1904 and redeveloped the ground for use by a football club. When Fulham turned down the opportunity to play in the stadium, Gus Mears decided to form his own team. Chelsea FC has played at ‘The Bridge’ ever since. The stadium boasted a capacity of up to 100,000 spectators in the early days, but when it converted to an all-seated ground following the Taylor Report in 1990, maximum capacity was reduced to 50,000.
