Brief History of Sheffield Wednesday FC
Sheffield Wednesday FC was formed in 1867 after a motion passed during a meeting at the Adelphi hotel – now the site of The Crucible – to expand The Wednesday Cricket Club to include football. It was hoped that football would keep the team fit during the winter months, but as the popularity of football increased, it soon became the main revenue of the club. The Wednesday Club split into two separate sports clubs in 1882 and the cricket club later disbanded.
Sheffield Wednesday became a professional football side in 1887. The Owls were declined entry to the Football League in 1889 and so became founder members of the breakaway Football Alliance. Sheffield Wednesday won the inaugural Alliance league championship and also reached the final of the FA Cup. The club was subsequently voted into the First Division in 1892, which had been extended to include sixteen teams. Sheffield Wednesday went on to become one of the country’s leading sides and over the next forty-five years, the club won four First Division titles and three FA Cups. The Owls have since tended to alternate between the top two divisions, spending over sixty years in the top flight in total. In 1991, the club ended a major trophy drought that had spanned over fifty years by beating Manchester United in the League Cup final.
Did you know…
Sheffield Wednesday FC was initially a cricket side called ‘The Wednesday Club’. The name originated as local craftsmen would take a half-day off work every Wednesday so that they could take part in cricket matches. The meeting that led to the formation of the football club also took place on a Wednesday. Sheffield Wednesday is the only English league team with a weekday in their name.
The club was originally known as “The Blades", which was a reference to the city’s famous steel industry that specialised in knives and cutlery. The club’s nickname changed to “The Owls"in 1899, when the side moved to the Owlerton Stadium.
Sheffield Wednesday have remained at the Owlerton Stadium ever since, but it was renamed as Hillsborough Stadium in 1914 after the newly created parliamentary constituency. The ground has a capacity of nearly 40,000 spectators and it hosted several fixtures in the 1966 FIFA World Cup and 1996 European Championships. The infamous Hillsborough tragedy took place during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final, claiming the lives of ninety-six Liverpool supporters. This prompted increased attention to safety in stadia around the country, including insistence upon all-seated grounds.
