Brief History of Rangers
Rangers FC was formed in 1873 and the club became one of ten founder members of the Scottish Football League in 1890. The Gers won the inaugural title in 1891, which they were forced to share with Dumbarton, as the two teams finished the season with the same number of points. Rangers have since won over fifty Scottish Championships and over fifty domestic cups, becoming the most successful club in the history of Scottish football. Together with local rivals Celtic, the Glaswegian clubs – known collectively as the Old Firm – have dominated Scottish competition. In 1961, Rangers extended their success into Europe. The Gers reached the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup and thus became the first British team to contest a European final. After finishing as runners-up in the competition twice, the club finally won the European Cup in 1972. Rangers became the first Scottish team to qualify for the last thirty-two of the UEFA Cup in 2006 and the club reached the final two years later.

Rangers FC was named after an English rugby team that the club’s founders had read about in a book. The team is also known as “The Gers", “The Teddy Bears", “The Light Blues" and fans are often referred to as “The Bluenoses".
Rangers play at the Ibrox Stadium, originally named Ibrox Park, which was built in 1899. Ibrox is one of the oldest grounds in the United Kingdom and it was famously developed in 1929 by the highly rated architect, Archibald Leitch. Many have rated the Ibrox Stadium as the ‘most majestic’ work Leitch ever completed. The ground recorded the highest ever British attendance during the 1939 Old Firm derby. Over 118,500 supporters turned up for the game. In 1971, a stairway barrier collapsed as the crowd was leaving the ground. Sixty-six supporters died in the subsequent crush of people. This was the second tragedy to occur at the Ibrox stadium and it led the club to convert the ground into an all-seated arena. Capacity now stands at approximately 51,000.

Other featured European ties include the European Cup Winners’ Cup win of 1972 and the UEFA Cup final of 2008. In addition to match reports, the Football Book features articles on the take-over by David Murray in 1988 and the appointment of Walter Smith as manager in 1991.
