Brief History of Hull City FC
Hull City FC was founded in 1904. This was relatively late for a professional football club and was mainly due to the previous domination of rugby in the city. The Tigers finished third in the Second Division in 1910, missing out on promotion by just 0.29 of a goal. This was especially frustrating for the Tigers, as it would take Hull City over one hundred years to reach the top flight. The club was finally promoted in 2008, following a 1-0 victory against Bristol City in the play-off finals. Hull City had risen from the bottom league to the top division in just five years, one of the quickest turnarounds in the history of the British game. The Tigers have also reached the latter stages of the FA Cup.
Did you know...
Hull City FC is known as “The Tigers" due to the colours of the club’s home strip. The team has played in black and amber for the majority of their history and began to play in striped shirts in the early 1960s. A tiger also appears on the Hull City badge.
The club played at the Boulevard Stadium in the early 1900s, but they were only allowed to use the ground when no rugby league matches were scheduled. Hull City soon built its own stadium, Anlaby Road, which opened in 1906. The ground was severely damaged during the Blitz, with repairs costing in excess of £1,000. Hull City was forced to briefly move back to the Boulevard Stadium before the club relocated to Boothferry Park in 1949. The Tigers now play at the KC Stadium, named after sponsors Kingston Communications. The ground was completed in 2002 at a cost of £44 million. The KC Stadium also hosts rugby league competitions and rock concerts, with a capacity of over 25,000.
