Brief History of Fulham FC
Fulham FC was formed in 1879, becoming the first professional football club in London. The Cottagers spent much of the 1960s in the First Division, before suffering relegation in 1968. Although Fulham would go on to spend many years in lower leagues, the club continued to field a star-studded line up and they reached the FA Cup final as a Second Division side in 1975. Fulham fought financial difficulty in the mid-1990s, before Mohammed Al Fayed took control of the club and provided much needed stability in 1997. At their lowest point, The Cottagers had found themselves in the Fourth Division, but a stunning comeback ensured a return to top flight football in the new millennium. The club qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2002 - beating Bologna in the final of the Intertoto Cup – and the Cottagers progressed to the third round with a brilliant 5-1 aggregate win over Dinamo Zagreb. In addition to team success, Fulham has also been famous for showcasing great individual talent. Johnny Haynes, Bobby Robson and George Best have all dazzled the Craven Cottage crowd and a great Academy is in place at Fulham to uncover more talent in the future.
Did you know…
One of the Cottagers’ biggest rivals is Chelsea FC, as both teams play at grounds located in Fulham. Chelsea’s home stadium, Stamford Bridge, was redeveloped into a football ground from an old Athletics venue in the early 1900s. Gus Mears originally offered the use of the stadium to Fulham, but the Cottagers turned it down due to a financial disagreement. Chelsea was subsequently formed to make use of the ground, but the team would probably not have existed had Fulham agreed to make Stamford Bridge its home. The Cottagers’ other main rival is Brentford FC and Fulham also has small rivalries with various London clubs, such as Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Crystal Palace.
Fulham FC is known as “The Cottagers" due to the name of the club’s stadium, Craven Cottage. The ground opened in 1896, consisting of four wooden structures that each held 250 seats. The land had previously been home to ‘Crave Cottage’, a royal hunting lodge dating back over three hundred years. When Fulham identified the area as an ideal place to build a stadium, it was so overgrown that it took over two years to clear. Renowned stadium architect Archibald Leitch was hired to work on the ground in 1905 and he developed the venue at a cost of £15,000. Following further redevelopments, Craven Cottage now has a capacity of approximately 25,000 supporters.
