Brief History of Cardiff City FC
Cardiff City FC was founded by Bartley Wilson in 1899. Football was becoming increasingly popular at the time and Wilson thought it would be a good way to keep his Riverside Cricket Club fit during the winter. The side merged with Riverside Albion in 1902 and became officially named Cardiff City FC six years later, having been asked to prove that it was good enough to use the city’s name. The Bluebirds developed into one of the most successful clubs in the Football League during the 1920s and finished as runners-up of the First Division in 1924. Cardiff City won the FA Cup in 1927 and thus became the first non-English side to win a major English competition. City also dominated football in Wales, winning the Welsh Cup over twenty times in total. Success in the Welsh Cup enabled the Bluebirds to compete in Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. The highlight of the club’s European campaign was reaching the semi-final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1967, where they narrowly lost to Hamburger Sport-Verein. Cardiff City returned to the latter stages of cup competition in 2008 by reaching the FA Cup final.
Did you know…
Cardiff City FC is nicknamed “The Bluebirds" due to the colour of the team’s home strip. A bluebird appears in the centre of the club badge and a daffodil and dragon has recently been added, as fans wanted to recreate the original crest. Since the FA Cup win in 1927, London-based Cardiff fans have also been known as “The 1927 Club".
The Bluebirds’ main home has been Ninian Park, where the club played for almost a century. The stadium was initially a waste site and extensive work was needed to convert it into a football ground. Although it was going to be known as ‘Sloper Park’, the club eventually named the stadium after Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart, who had played a large role in the construction. Plans for a new stadium were put in place in 2007 and Cardiff City began their final season at Ninian Park in 2008. The Cardiff International Sports Stadium was officially opened in January 2009 and it has a capacity of over 26,000.
