Brief History of Bristol City FC
Bristol City FC was founded in 1894 and was briefly known as Bristol South End. Manager Sam Hollis had been given forty pounds to form a side that was capable of competing in the Southern League and he went on to surpass all expectations. After merging with local rivals Bedminster in 1900, Bristol City was elected to the Football League, becoming the only non-London league club to be located south of Birmingham. The Robins enjoyed a successful era through the early 1900s, winning the Second Division in 1906 and finishing as runners-up of the First Division in 1907. City reached the FA Cup final in 1909, but lost against Manchester United, prompting a decline in form. The team was relegated to the Second Division in 1911 and did not return to the top flight for sixty-five years. Bristol City enjoyed a second period of top flight football from 1976 to 1980, before the side was relegated. Financial problems rocked the Robins and the club fell down to the Fourth Division. Bristol City has since enjoyed a gradual revival. Fans celebrated reaching the Championship in 2007 and the club almost achieved a return to the top flight in the following season.
