Tottenham Hotspur FC was formed in 1882 by a group of grammar school boys who took Bible classes at All Hallows Church. Their team would later merge with members of Hotspur Cricket Club and become known as Hotspur Football Club. This name was subsequently changed to Tottenham Hotspur to distinguish the side from another football team that was around at the time called London Hotspur.
Tottenham began their tradition of playing in white shirts and navy blue shirts as a tribute to Preston North End FC, who were the most successful football club at the time and had just won the ‘Double’. Spurs would soon have their own success to celebrate however, as the club won its first FA Cup in 1901. A top flight league title followed fifty years later, as a result of Tottenham developing ’push and run’ football under manager Arthur Rose. In the late 1950s, Bill Nicholson took over the side and led Spurs through one of their greatest eras. The club won eight major trophies in sixteen years.

In 1934, Tottenham Hotspur was challenging for the title in the top flight. The team would eventually finish third, but their best away match of the season had been against Aston Villa. Spurs raced out to a 0-4 lead by half-time, stunning the Villans with a commanding performance. Both teams would score after the break and when Tottenham eventually won the game 1-5, the opposition players were pelted with oranges and apples from their home supporters. Tottenham Hotspur handed an even bigger defeat to Everton FC in Bill Nicholson’s first game as Tottenham manager in 1958. The Toffees were annihilated 10-4 in Spurs’ biggest ever league win at that time.

In 1965 Spurs beat Torquay United 5-1 in the FA Cup third round replay, and in 1971, the club knocked Keflavik out of the UEFA Cup by an incredible aggregate score of 15-1. This included a thumping 9-0 home victory for the London club in the second leg of the tie.
