Preston North End Personalised Football Diary
Fabulous Diary Gifts for Fans of the Lilywhites!
Preston North End FC originated as a general sports venture, but became a football club in 1880. In 1883, William Sudell employed a group of talented Scottish players who would form the nucleus of Preston FC’s developing team. Results were encouraging, but the Lilywhites were stunned by disqualification from the FA cup in 1884. Sudell had openly admitted to buying his players, but this was considered to be in breach of the competition rules. The league turned professional the following year and Preston North End became the first ever professional English Champions, also winning the FA Cup. Amazingly, the club remained undefeated in both competitions for the entire season. The Lilywhites have gone on to win every division title, but the club has understandably found it difficult to match the incredible success of the early years.
Our Personalised Preston North End Diaries feature twelve match reports from our newspaper archives, celebrating some of the best Preston FC performances from the past hundred years. Starting from the month of your choice, these fascinating gifts are a great idea for any fan of the Lilywhites.
Diary Highlights
The Personalised Preston North End Diaries feature a range of fantastic performances from both league and cup competitions, starting with the incredible FA Cup run of 1922. Although the Lilywhites beat defending champions Tottenham in their run to the final, the team would eventually lose 1-0 to Huddersfield following a devastating penalty decision. In a twist of fate, Preston FC faced Huddersfield again in the 1938 FA Cup final. Thousands of fans travelled to Wembley for the game and understandably, revenge was on many of their minds. The match finished in a complete reverse of the previous FA Cup final; Preston North End won 1-0 following a penalty in extra time.
In addition to stories on the FA Cup, the A5 Diary features many reports on outstanding league victories. Preston North End spent much of the 1950s in the top flight. In 1956, the club thrashed Sunderland 6-0 in a dominant performance, and in 1960, the Lilywhites beat Arsenal 2-0. The latter result was an early highlight of a season that would end in disappointment. In the summer of 1961, Preston FC was relegated and the club would be kept out of the top flight for over forty years.
Preston North End experienced mixed success in the lower divisions, including falling down to the Fourth Division in 1986. The club fought back strongly and fans were given reason to cheer at Deepdale in 2000, as a 3-2 win against Millwall guaranteed Preston FC the Second Division title. In 2005, the Lilywhites beat Derby County 2-0 on aggregate in the play-off finals. Finally, our Diary Gift includes the 4-1 thrashing of Leeds United from 2006. This was one of the best Preston North End performances in many years and it gave supporters much confidence for the seasons ahead.
