Norwich City Personalised Football Diary
Terrific Diary Gifts for Norwich City Fans!
Norwich City FC was formed in 1902, following a meeting in Criterion Café in White Lion Street. Although debt and liquidation would force the Canaries to stutter in the early years, the club was reformed in 1919 and it went on to enjoy many successful cup runs before entering the leagues’ top flight for the first time in 1972. When financial problems arose once more, an unlikely saviour emerged to take Norwich City out of hot water. Popular television chef Delia Smith and husband Michael Wynn-Jones took over majority shares of the club in 1996 and set up ‘Delia’s Canary Catering’ at Carrow Road. Delia would soon become famous for more than her food, by walking on the pitch during a game against Man City to urge the supporters to get behind the team. Although Norwich FC lost the game, Delia’s speech still remains a Youtube favourite!
Our Personalised Norwich City Diaries feature twelve reproduced match reports from our newspaper archives, which focus on a variety of fantastic performances from the past century. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries are the perfect gift for any fan of the Canaries.
Diary Highlights
These fascinating Personalised Norwich City Diaries begin in 1935, with the official opening of Carrow Stadium. League form stagnated towards the end of the decade, but entertaining FA Cup runs had begun to enthral the club’s fans. In 1937, Norwich City beat Liverpool FC 3-0 in the third round. In 1959, an entertaining 3-2 win against Sheffield United in the quarter-final replay pushed the Canaries into the semi-finals. One of the best FA Cup performances however, came in the fourth round of the 1963 campaign. Norwich FC thrashed Newcastle 5-0, with Terry Allcock scoring four goals.
By this stage, the Canaries had just won their first major trophy - the League Cup. This new competition provided a further platform for Norwich City success and in 1975, Norwich FC reached their second final following victory against Manchester United. The A5 Diary focuses on the first leg of this exciting semi-final, which ended 1-0 to the Canaries. Although the team would lose the final to Aston Villa, the trophy returned to Carrow Road in 1985 when Norwich City won the competition for the second time. One of the most tense games in this campaign had been the narrow victory 0-1 against Grimsby in the quarter-final, a match that also features in our Football Diary.
Domestic Cup runs were delighting the fans, but the Canaries were desperate to spread their wings into Europe. By 1992, they had qualified for the competition three times, but the ban on English clubs entering the competition due to the disaster at Heysel repeatedly denied Norwich City their moment. Following third place in the Premiership, Norwich finally played their first UEFA Cup match in September 1993, which ended in a 3-0 victory against Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.
In addition to match reports on these famous cup fixtures, the Diary Gift also features league highlights, such as qualifying for the Championship play-off finals in 2004 and winning the First Division in 2005.
