Millwall Personalised Football Diary
Terrific Diary Gifts for Fans of the Lions!
Millwall FC formed in 1885 and the club has since reached the FA Cup final and enjoyed top flight football. The team was originally nicknamed ‘The Dockers’, as this tended to be the profession of their fans. Millwall FC was the only football club in the country to regularly start home games as 3.15pm. This concession was made to allow supporters enough time to finish their shift and get to the game. The team’s nickname later changed to ‘The Lions’. Millwall played in a stadium called The Den and formed the motto: ‘We Fear No Foe Where E'er We Go’. Fans of the Lions have always been famous for their passion and The Den soon became one of the most feared grounds in the country. Many believed that the vocal support created a goal advantage for Millwall before the teams had even entered the pitch.
Our Personalised Millwall Diaries incorporate twelve reproduced match reports from our newspaper archives, including some of the club’s best performances and results from the past century. Starting from the month of your choice, this is a great gift idea for any fan of the Lions.
Diary Highlights
These Personalised Millwall Diaries include match reports on a variety of exciting domestic cup ties and league fixtures. Below are just a few of the games that feature in our special A5 Diary.
In 1957, Millwall FC forged a reputation as a dogged cup team that feared no opponent. The Lions faced Newcastle United in the FA Cup fourth round, played in front of a crowd of 45,000 fans. Newcastle had already won three FA Cups in that decade alone and Millwall had been struggling in the Third Division. However, the Lions somehow upset the odds and beat the Magpies 2-1.
In 1988, Millwall FC found themselves in a strong position in the Second Division. There had been pressure on the club to achieve promotion, as by now the Lions were the only London-based professional football team never to have played in the top flight. John Docherty was manager of the side at the time and Millwall flourished with the front pairing of Sheringham and Cascarino. The Lions beat Hull City 0-1 in the last game of the season and therefore guaranteed automatic promotion to the First Division. Our Millwall Diary Gift also includes the last league match of 2001. On this occasion, Millwall FC had already earned promotion to the Championship. However, a 5-0 thrashing of Oldham Town clinched the Second Division title and completed a sensational second half of the season.
One of the biggest highlights in this Personalised Calendar is a report on the FA Cup semi-final of 2004. Millwall beat Sunderland 0-1 to reach their first ever major final. Dennis Wise had led the team through the campaign as player-manager and no other club outside the top flight had progressed this far since the formation of the Premier League. The semi-final took place at Old Trafford and in a twist of fate, Millwall went on to face Manchester United in the final. Although the Lions lost the match, fans were thrilled with their day out at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and players were inspired to strive for similar success in the future.
